Matthaus: Sane joined City for the money

German World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has blasted Leroy Sane for joining Manchester City and believes that his decision to do so was ‘motivated by financial reasons’.

Sane joined City in a deal believed to be worth £37m – the biggest deal of the Premier League transfer window so far – earlier this week.

Sane will make several times his Schalke wages at Manchester City and that has been decisive in his decision to make the move to the Premier League. I cannot come up with any other reason. He was playing at a real traditional club at Schalke.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Matthaus also believes that Sane will struggle to break into the starting line-up at the Etihad and says that he would have advised his compatriot.

I would have advised him to stay put for at least one more season. He will struggle at City.

Matthaus is convinced that City boss Pep Guardiola will not have the time to nurture the 20-year-old because of having to ‘impose his own philosophy’ in Manchester.

He will no longer be enjoying this comfort zone at City. Pep Guardiola will be more than busy to impose his own philosophy at City. He will not have the time to give Sane extra attention when things are not going as planned.

Despite lambasting Sane, Matthaus has praised his ability – listing his great technique and pace as reasons as to why he has succeeded.

I don’t have any doubts that he has the ability to enjoy a very successful career. He is fast, has great technique and does not seem to feel any pressure.
