Enzo Fernandez should be the first signing Manchester City make once Enzo Maresca arrives – here is why.

The midfield area at Man City is due an upgrade, especially with Bernardo Silva making his final appearance for the club on Sunday.

With Rodri spending time on the sidelines in recent weeks, it has been clear that there is a wide gap between Pep Guardiola’s first choice and backup players in the position.

Nico Gonzalez, Mateo Kovacic and Tijjani Reijnders were all rotated. However, none were able to hold down a place in the starting lineup for multiple games.

Therefore, City need to be looking at what midfielders they can bring in this summer, in order to prevent this from continuing to be a problem.

Enzo Fernandez has been linked with Man City

Florian Plettenberg has reported that Enzo Fernandez is a midfielder ‘strongly wanted’ by Enzo Maresca, the man likely to replace Guardiola.

The pair have a good relationship, with Fernadez playing under Maresca when the Italian was in charge of Chelsea.

And initial talks behind the scenes have already taken place, increasing the likelihood of a move taking place.

However, Real Madrid have also shown interest in Fernandez, so being at the front of the queue has to be a priority for City.

Maresca needs Man City’s full support

There is no point bringing Maresca to the Etihad Stadium, only to overrule his calls and ignore his requests.

Fernandez is a player he has experience working with, which would benefit Man City in the long-run. So getting him signed ought to be prioritised.

In addition to this, the Italian trusted Fernandez enough to make him his captain whenever Reece James was unavailable for Chelsea.

Fernandez would be a great addition to City’s squad

Without a doubt, Fernandez’s versatility would prove to be very useful. Indeed, he is strong in both defence and attack.

With 10 goals and four assists in the Premier League this season, the Argentine international would aid City’s threat up front.

Additionally, the fact he is still only 25 means he should have a few years at the very top of his game, which cannot be said of Rodri.

If the Sky Blues are able to sign Fernandez and Elliot Anderson, they would have the best midfield in the Premier League.
