- Pep Guardiola questioned after Wembley triumph
- Man City boss gave brief response
- Future talk continues after FA Cup win
Manchester City’s latest Wembley triumph gave Pep Guardiola another major moment, but one post-match exchange quickly became part of the wider conversation around his future.
Man City beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to lift the FA Cup, with Antoine Semenyo scoring the decisive goal in the second half.
The result secured another trophy for Pep Guardiola’s side during a campaign in which they have already won the League Cup.
The Sky Blues also remain in the Premier League title race. Now, their attention is turning towards a crucial league fixture against Bournemouth.
Regardless, amid the celebrations at Wembley, Guardiola was asked a direct question about speculation surrounding his future.
Pep Guardiola gives short response to Man City exit question
TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods asked Guardiola about his future at the Etihad. Unfortunately for the English reporter, the Catalan manager refused to give a definitive answer.
There have been rumours of an early departure, despite the gaffer’s contract lasting till the end of the 2026/27 season. Whether Guardiola respects that deal or leaves this summer is yet to be seen.
“There are so many rumours about you leaving. You’re not, are you?” Woods asked Guardiola. Likewise, the City boss smiled and replied, “What rumours?”
The FA Cup winner then looked around in disbelief before leaving the interview, wishing the reporters a happy evening.
Guardiola had already answered the question before Wembley
Only hours before the FA Cup final, the City manager had already given a clear answer when asked by BBC Sport whether he would leave the club before the start of the next season.
Despite the rumours, Guardiola seemed definite with his answer. The gaffer replied with a straight yes to “Do you reckon you’ll be here next season?”
Likewise, the Catalan manager has confirmed that he will see out his contract at the Etihad. However, an extension might be a stretch given almost a decade of football management at the top.
Vincent Kompany remains the long-term option
If Guardiola doesn’t go back on his word, Man City can slow down a bit when it comes to succession planning.
Regardless, Vincent Kompany remains inevitably close when it comes to taking over the Etihad for the long term.
However, the Belgian’s contract with Bayern Munich lasts till 2029. Likewise, even if Pep sees out his current contract, Kompany’s immediate availability remains a big question.
