- Keir Starmer commented on Man City success
- Pep Guardiola was also mentioned after title race blow
- Arsenal title win referenced in the Parliament
Pep Guardiola’s uncertain Man City future has now drawn attention beyond football after Keir Starmer referenced the Catalan in Parliament.
The Sky Blues lost control of the title race after their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Tuesday. That result meant Arsenal could no longer be caught at the top.
Guardiola congratulated Mikel Arteta’s side after the game. However, his own future has become the bigger story around the Etihad.
Several reports suggest that the Catalan is expected to leave this summer. Regardless, that conversation has now reached the House of Commons.
Keir Starmer comments on Pep Guardiola Man City success
Speaking in Parliament, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer took a moment to reference Pep Guardiola’s impact at Man City.
Being an Arsenal fan himself, the politician added a personal note to the reference. He also congratulated the Gunners on winning the Premier League after 22 years.
“Mr Speaker, it would be remiss of me not to comment on one of Manchester’s great heroes moving on after almost a decade,” Starmer said, via Sky Sports.
He added, “So let me congratulate Pep Guardiola on all his success at Manchester City. And Mr Speaker, if I could declare an interest, I’d also like to say congratulations to Arsenal Football Club on becoming the Premier League champions.”
Guardiola announcement remains on hold
Despite multiple sources claiming Guardiola’s premature departure, an official announcement is yet to be made by Man City.
The Catalan manager is expected to leave this summer, one year before his contract expires. Guardiola himself refused to confirm his position following the Bournemouth draw.
Regardless, if Guardiola has decided to leave, we should expect an official announcement soon, as Aston Villa could be his last game managing the club.
Arsenal reference adds sting to City moment
Despite giving their best, dropping points in the closing fixtures of the season cost Man City the title. The FA Cup winners remain unbeaten against Arsenal this season.
Likewise, the Gunners faced doubts over their title win following a 2-1 loss to City last month. However, they have yet to lose a single match following that fixture.
Man City, on the other hand, drew two games. The first came against Everton, which resulted in a 3-3 draw.
The second was against Bournemouth on Tuesday as Erling Haaland’s late equaliser wasn’t enough to inspire a comeback.
Regardless, Guardiola would’ve liked to have won a domestic treble in what is likely his last season at the Etihad. However, he’ll still depart as the only manager to have won two domestic cup doubles in England.
