- Man City could stay involved in Girona’s rebuild
- City Group still value the Spanish club highly
- Loan options may become important this summer
Manchester City’s wider football network could still have a major role to play in Spain despite Girona suffering a damaging setback.
Man City have become increasingly connected to Girona in recent years through the City Football Group network.
Several players have moved between the clubs, either directly or through the wider network. Likewise, the Spanish side often offers an important development platform for City.
However, Girona’s relegation has naturally raised questions around how the club will rebuild and whether their place inside the City Group structure could change.
Man City link could help Girona after relegation
According to AS, City Group still consider Girona an important asset despite the club’s relegation. The report claims that Girona expect the relationship with the group to help produce loan options this summer.
AS also state that the Spanish club’s sporting director Quique Carcel is already working with City to analyse possible options for the 2026/27 squad.
The Spanish club are preparing for a major rebuild after relegation, with Míchel Sánchez also leaving his role as manager.
Quique Álvarez, the current Girona B manager, has been gaining ground as a possible option for the first-team job.
Girona may need promotion-ready players
In La Liga, Girona used Man City and City Group loans to add technical quality and raise the squad ceiling. However, in the Spanish second division, they’ll need a different profile.
That cuts out young City players who aren’t as experienced in such high-pressure environments. La Liga 2 remains less glamorous and more physically demanding than its top-flight counterpart.
Likewise, Girona’s transfer strategy will change through the summer, with the Spanish side less able to afford experimental loans.
City loans are not automatic fixes
Pablo Maffeo and Yan Couto have been some of the success stories who joined Girona on loan from Man City.
However, AS pointed out that the club decided not to take any Man City loanees during the summer following their relegation.
The reported reason was that the sporting director Carcel wasn’t convinced by the loan options offered by Man City.
Loan moves to the Spanish side remain attractive for the Sky Blues, but only if the player looks reliable enough to help the club achieve promotion.
