  • Attacking rebuild remains on the agenda at the Etihad
  • Aston Villa could demand a huge summer fee
  • Several elite clubs are also monitoring the situation

Manchester City’s next attacking move could carry an added layer of familiarity as the club continue planning for a new era at the Etihad Stadium.

City are preparing for another important summer after a season of major transition. The expected arrival of Enzo Maresca would naturally bring tactical continuity following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

However, the new personnel still need to match the demands of a fresh cycle. This is especially true in attacking midfield, as Bernardo Silva’s exit leaves the Sky Blues without one of their most flexible players.

Hugo Viana has already inherited a squad that has been heavily reshaped across recent windows. However, further attacking quality could still be needed if City want to close the gap at the top again.

Man City involved in Morgan Rogers transfer race

According to TEAMtalk, Man City are firmly in the race to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers this summer.

The report claims City are actively involved in discussions over a potential move, with Rogers now under serious consideration at the Etihad.

Arsenal and Chelsea are also said to be interested in the England international. Likewise, Bayern Munich and PSG have reportedly held conversations around his situation as well.

TEAMtalk further claim that Rogers is open to rejoining City if the club formalise their interest and present him with the opportunity to move back.

However, Villa are not expected to make any potential deal easy. The report adds that Rogers could command a fee higher than the £100m paid for Jack Grealish in 2021.

Rogers has become far more than a prospect

The 23-year-old joined City from West Bromwich Albion in 2019 but left for Middlesbrough in 2023 after loan spells away from the club.

His move to Villa in February 2024 has since changed the trajectory of his career. The midfielder has become one of Unai Emery’s most important players.

He has also signed a long-term contract until 2030 and established himself in the England picture. The midfielder’s recent Europa League form has further strengthened his reputation.

Rogers scored three goals and made five assists in 12 Europa League starts. He also averaged 0.33 xGOT in the competition last season.

Why City interest makes tactical sense

Rogers’ versatility makes the appeal obvious for a club like Man City. The England international can operate on both flanks as well as in attacking midfield.

That flexibility would be valuable for a side trying to replace some of the connective qualities Silva offered for years.

Rogers can also survive under pressure, drive through contact and attack space quickly when transitions open up.

However, the question is whether City would be willing to go near the kind of fee Villa are reportedly likely to demand.
