- Claudio Echeverri signed for Man City in January 2024
- He has been loaned out on three occasions since then
- The club have made a decision on the attacker’s future
Manchester City have drawn up plans for Claudio Echeverri, after a season which saw him play for both Bayer Leverkusen and Girona.
It has been two-and-a-half years since Man City signed Echeverri from River Plate, but he has only made one Premier League appearance.
The young Argentine was immediately loaned back to his home country for a year, before eventually making his City debut in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.
Despite going on to score his first goal in a sky blue jersey at the Club World Cup, the now 20-year-old was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen.
However, he only made one start in the Bundesliga, being benched on a number of occasions. This led to Man City recalling the attacker from his loan and sending him to Girona instead.
Man City want another European loan for Claudio Echeverri
According to TyC Sports, River Plate are interested in signing Echeverri on loan, one-and-a-half years after his most recent spell at the club.
City do have plans to send him out on a temporary basis again, but doing business with a European club is preferred.
Echeverri has already shown he can perform well in the Liga Profesional de Fútbol, but he needs to prove he is good enough to make it in the Premier League.
Echverri struggled at Girona too
While Echverri’s time in Spain was more fruitful than his Bayer Leverkusen stint, he was still on the bench more often than not.
In total, the Argentina under-23s international only started five matches in La Liga. He came off the bench in the club’s final four matches of the season.
Therefore, while it is understandable that City do not want to loan him back to River Plate, his options are becoming limited at this point.
Man City should loan Echverri to the Championship
The Citizens want Echverri playing at a decent standard, but they also want him to be regularly starting matches.
In order to satisfy both these desires, the starlet should be loaned out to a Championship club, giving him a proper taste of English football.
Another European move where is not going to start would be pointless, while it would not be productive for him to return to Argentina either.
If Echverri is ever going to make it at City, he needs to adapt to the English game, and he cannot do this abroad.
Plus, if he is unable to deliver in the second tier, it makes Man City’s long-term decision on his future very clear-cut.
